Walking around the Clarendon Kenworth Klassic in September, and I pass a very familiar truck. And it should be because this Limited Edition Legend SAR (227) was once one of Jon Kelly's. But it is no longer. It now is driven by one Bob Balenzano and the truck is owned by NewTech Logistics at Greystanes, NSW.
Forty years ago Bob started off in a furniture van and, “worked my way up slowly. I spent 20 years doing that. One of the toughest jobs in trucking next to livestock.”
With NewTech since 2022, Bob tells me the company’s only been around about five years but are going ahead in leaps and bounds, with now around 63 prime movers and 80 sets of trailers.
So how did this rooster get into a special Legend SAR?
“The boss saw the boss registry always wanted one of these, and this popped up at auction. He rang me and said, ‘there's one at auction. I want to buy it.’ I said, "Well, sent me the details. He sent me a couple of photos, and I said, BUY IT!
“We put it on the road October last year. It is effectively my truck, no one else drives it. I go on holiday it gets parked up.”
There’s been a few changes apart from the name, including offsets on the steer, elephant ears, guard flares, snorkels on the air intakes and cutting back the top step. Behind the sunglasses, folks, you can tell that Bob loves this truck.
