Secret Men’s Business 125: Rick ‘Bubba’ Morris

Rick ‘Bubba’ Morris is just 21 and owns a 1983 Kenworth K125. Bought from a truck yard in Melbourne five years ago, the 125 is powered by a Cummins 400 Big Cam. Paintwork and the interior are remarkable for the age with Bubba adding some scrolling and a mural on the back: ‘BUBBA’S BANGERS – Never give up’.

Those words carry extra meaning when you know that Bubba has Spina Bifida and that the ailment has never stood in the way of him achieving his dream of owning and driving a truck.

However entry to the cab was a bit of a problem and Bubba didn’t want to rely on dad’s help. So, dad – also Rick – came up with an ingenious idea. Steps.

“We came up with the idea of a step that looked like a toolbox. Originally there was a toolbox behind the old steps. And we wanted to make it look like it was part of the truck. We took the idea to Bubba’s uncle who created these ‘Stairways to (Bubba’s) Heaven’ in just two weeks.”

The steps (on both sides) are remotely operated, slide out in 60 seconds and will support up to 250kg. Simply brilliant!

Bubba has completed his knowledge test, will shortly go for his licence and we’ve no doubt he’ll succeed because, as dad and mum, Michelle said, he knows no other way.

“They said he’d never walk,” said Michelle. “He’s proved them all wrong. He’s always had that determination and tenacity to prove everyone wrong. Not only can he walk, he can drive a truck too. You know, life is what you make it, isn't it?”

We will follow Bubba’s journey with interest.
