Secret Men’s Business 107: Kurt ‘Sticks’ Green
First time attendee at Castlemaine was Waverly Forklifts (WFL) with half a dozen trucks on show. Owned by Charlie Schwerkolt, who owns Supercars Team 18, the trucks move Charlie’s approximately 5,000 Toyota Forklifts around the country to wherever they are needed.
Driver, Kurt Green, better known as Sticks, who is Sydney-based was there with his KW SAR 610.
“Before this I was in a T909 with a 50” sleeper, so I’ve come down a bit in living space but you know what? I don’t mind at all. This is the most ergonomic, liveable truck I’ve driven.
“I’ve been with WFL for 12 months and I’ve never looked back. They are a fantastic company to work for and nothing is ever too much trouble. That can be hard to come by our industry these days. This is a company that puts the driver before profits.
“Charlie is just a terrific bloke. He is very approachable, willing to help load and have a chat with us. He just loves being one of the boys.
“As the name implies we move forklifts around. We have a yard in every capital city and we service a lot of events. We might pick up in Brisbane and come down to Sydney because they have an event down there. It could be Supercars or it could be a rock concert.”
I asked Sydney-based Kurt why he’d come down to Castlemaine.
“This is a type of calibre you are dealing with at Waverley Forklifts,” he replied. “They asked if I would be interested in coming to the show. It is more of a bonding session and getting to mix with the boys socially. As an interstate driver you tend not to see the guys most of the time.
“I haven’t been to a truck show in 30 years and it brings back a lot of memories. This Castlemaine Truck Show has rejuvenated my faith in the transport industry. There are that many kids who are truck oriented and driving these big trucks. It is amazing. I thought it had all gone until I came here.”
