ELECTRIC: Would you? Should you?
Electricity is playing an important role in last-mile delivery. There are benefits in terms of reduced fuel costs and maintenance. They cut pollution in the cities – an area where regulation will only become more stringent, and they allow delivery to take place where there are noise bans and other diesel-powered restrictions.
But what are they like to live with? Can you get a day’s work done or do you have to take a two hour lunch break while the batteries recharge. Can you put a decent load on board? Does the weight of the batteries slow down the vehicles acceleration and leave a long line of frustrated drivers behind you?
To find out, I grabbed one of Iveco’s new eDaily vans and spent a day in it (actually two half days, which gives the same result) to see what this method of transport is like to live with.
Noise, performance, carrying capacity and range anxiety – yep I had that in spades at one point – are all covered.
I know electric is aimed at a small segment of the market, but it is an important segment. If your business wants to get the best out of the last-mile, you should watch this.
